Some thoughts on ISTE Standards
Although many people think ISTE standards are too generic and may not be able to guide either learners' or educators' practice, they provide some very interesting insights into the use of technologies in learning. When talking about ed tech, we often have the misconception that one needs to have the extensive knowledge of those fancy gadgets. However, the instructional design of the learning experience is missing. An instruction with no fancy technology is not necessarily a bad one; while an instruction with no design is doomed to be a failure. Therefore, ISTE standards try to point out the roles that a learner/ an educator can be with the help of the technologies. The fact is, without technologies, one can still be in those roles. Ironically, I am teaching this ed tech class, but the last thing I want to talk about is how to use any specific technology. I am almost slightly against those who brag about their fancy toys.
